Fire Power ~ The Last Element

What happens when you add Fire to the first three elements — Earth, Air and Water? I realize that Fire is considered the first element; however, it was the last one we, mankind, received, and so in the present consideration, let us considered the beginning from the end or what happens when the first comes last and the last comes first…

What will happen will depend on how whether we choose to destroy or to create with it. When we play with it, ignorantly or otherwise, we end up getting burned. This we learn from experience.

We could utilize it to stay warm from the cold, prepare warm food, cleanse in warm water. Those would be beneficial uses of fire. We could also create weapons with it, for protection or for violent aggression. Good or bad the intention, Fire will serve us as we desire.

That’s probably why Zeus didn’t want Prometheus to give it to us. We weren’t wise enough. He knew we’d get burned. But Prometheus knew that without it we wouldn’t survive; we’d die from the cold. Fire, dangerous to handle, but it’s the only way to survive. And, not only survive, but thrive.

Through it, we might find ourselves in the throes of immoral pleasures or passions. On the other hand, we could touch the higher realms of spiritual inspiration and magic–physically, mentally or emotionally.

Fire–it all depends on what we do with it. One thing about Fire; when you misuse it or use it, there will be immediate feedback. We will learn, one way or another. We wanted to be like the Gods. We’ve got our chance. We’ve got Fire power. How are we handling it so far?

Part 1 – The busy, busy days of youth camp focused on a central concept, reason, or theme which brought the particular group together.

The busy, busy daylight hours of outdoor activities and adventures—setting up tents or claiming bunks in the cabins; unpacking, organizing, arranging–making sure things were in order. We invigorated in this new, exciting—even if temporary—environment. We had to know what the different whistle sounds from our counselor’s whistle meant—both long and short bursts, and how to responsibly use our own—in case of emergency only! And we had to attend to our assigned duties, do our chores—for the good of the group. We chopped and gathered wood, filled our buckets with water—taking turns at leading and following–through narrow hiking trails full of thorns and switches—to see who had the most remaining water when we returned to base camp.

And, of course, each of us had our own walking stick! Perhaps we had feathers twined to its top, or maybe we’d whittled our initials into ours. It mattered not save that our identity was preserved and honored—respected by the group.

More assignments of observing, learning and writing down our notes on types of vegetation, insects, birds, perhaps even animals! … Oh my! Be on the look-out! Know the warning signs, and the way to signal for help, should you find yourself in danger or lost. Ever watching out for one another. Knowing where the first aid kit was. Staying alert.

And, lots and lots of bug spray and sunscreen lotion! Then comes the evening. Day is done, gone the sun. From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh…

And so we gather, we congregate, we assemble, and it is our way of giving thanks, of remembering who we are. As individuals we share stories while others listen. We take turns. Then as a group we sing, oftentimes in rounds. And we laugh. Sometimes we cry. Mostly we do both–with our hearts and minds joined in unity. We know, around the campfire, that we “belong”. Campfires bring us together to inspire as well as consume. Here it is we congregate in the sacred open space beneath the cosmic skies. Here our arduous encounters with sticks and stones, thorns and bushes, rivers and streams, sun and sweat, mosquitoes and critters, are brought in close and shared, recounted, sealed up to our remembrance.

Laughter and song, fire stoking and skyward gazing, we bring it in, we gather ’round. We unwind, we regroup. Bonds are forged that will never be forgotten. Here we are re-stimulated, re-ignited. Though our division of labor and skill and responsibility may differ tremendously ‘out there’, here we are reminded that we all belong, we are all needed and wanted–we are a group—a special sort of family–and it is a magical thing!

Maat was the ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, law, morality, and justice. Maat was also personified as a goddess regulating the stars, seasons, and the actions of both mortals and the deities, who set the order of the universe from chaos at the moment of creation. As a goddess in other traditions of the Egyptian pantheon, where most goddesses were paired with a male aspect, her masculine counterpart was Thoth and their attributes are similar. After her role in creation and continuously preventing the universe from returning to chaos, her primary role in Egyptian mythology dealt with the weighing of souls (also called the weighing of the heart) that took place in the underworld, Duat.
